Approach to Therapy
I believe, and research supports, that one of the most important components of effective therapy is building a solid, trusting relationship between the counselor and the client. I take time to get to know my clients, their concerns, history, hopes, and dreams. I seek to help them feel calm, comfortable, and accepted. The founder of “Person Centered” therapy, Carl Rogers, believes that empathy, unconditional positive regard, and genuineness are foundational to building relationships in counseling and I agree. I strive to embody these characteristics in my work.
I also believe that therapy is most effective when it is a collaborative process between the client and the therapist. I can’t “fix you” but I can help you figure out what you want to be different in your life, develop a plan to help you achieve your goals, and provide ideas, strategies, and resources to help you get there. I most commonly use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, and multicultural/constructivist theories and strategies in therapy. I use these theories and strategies to help me understand how your cognitive processes (thinking), behavior (actions), interactional and relational patterns (relationships), and contextual variables (life circumstances) relate to your issue(s) of concern and work with you to find ways to adjust and/or cope with these areas.
Through my experience working in this field, I have found that people often have greater personal wisdom, intuition, and resources for change than they realize and when given the time, tools, and support, they are capable of amazing things. Starting counseling can be frightening step, but it also opens up the possibility for positive change.
It is a great honor to be invited into people’s personal lives, especially in times of pain or uncertainty, and I truly value and appreciate the opportunity to do this work.
